127 Street Reconstruction Update
June 2016
Reconstruction of 127 Street from 118 Avenue to Yellowhead Trail began May 1.
Stage 1 Construction
The following work has been completed to date:
- Removal of the trees from the median on the west side of 127 St from Yellowhead Tr to 118 Ave.
- Removal of the road on the south side of Yellowhead Tr, as well as on the west side of 127 St from Yellowhead Tr to 121 Ave.
- Installation of new manholes on the west side of 127 St between Yellowhead Tr and 122 Ave.
Stage 1 should be completed by the end of July, at which time traffic will switch to the completed west side, with one lane in each direction. Stage 2 will begin with concrete/pavement removals on the east side of 127 Street.
Construction Zone Safety
In May, the project team distributed construction safety pamphlets to Prince Charles and St. Pius schools to help students learn about staying safe in the construction zone.
Detour & Traffic Update
Traffic barriers across 124 Street at 123 Avenue will remain in place as part of the Prince Charles Community Traffic Management Plan with suggested detours to St. Albert Trail, 121 Street, 142 Street, 149 Street and 97 Street. The implications of reinstating 124 Street as a detour, even temporarily, are significant for Prince Charles as it would see a return of 4,000-6,000 vehicles per day, as well as additional detour traffic adjacent to the neighbourhood park and residential properties during the summer months when more people are out and about. Street signs are in place to direct parents to the three schools in the area during construction.
Transit Service Update
The temporary shuttle service has moved to 120 Avenue while the 122 Avenue intersection is under construction. The shuttle service should return to 122 Avenue by early July.
